Telephone Plug Adapter Standards

At the begining of the 20th Century, countries across the globe scrambled to develop domestic telephone systems. Companies and Government Telecoms sought to protect their domestic networks for outside competition one way they did this was by developing competing standards for connecting the phone to the wall. While almost every phone system around the globe operates in a similar fashion, the small tiny phone jack's shape can often be the only difference that prevents one phone from using another outlet.

Country Telephone Outlet Adapter

Computer & Phone Connections.

If you are traveling overseas with a laptop or desktop computer chances are you won't need a voltage converter. Most laptops are multi-voltage and will operate on voltages ranging from 100 to 240 volts. Most desktops are dual voltage and can be switched to operate on either 110-120 or 220-240 volts.

That's right! Most computers do not require a voltage coverter. DOUBLE CHECK THE MANUAL THAT CAME WITH YOUR COMPUTER TO MAKE SURE!

You will, however, need to make safe connections to foreign power and telephone systems.

International Telephone Outlet Adapters.

North American computer modems and fax machines ust the RJ11 phone jack to connect to the phone line. To connecdt your modem overseas an International Telephone Adaptor may be required to adapt foreigh phone outlets to the RJ11 standard. The "duplex" design used on all Voltage Valet telephone adaptors listed here allows use of both the hotel phone and modem line without unplugging. Check the country list for the appropriate telephone adaptor for each country you plan to visit. You will need to carry all the telephone adaptors listed for each country as more than one type of telephone outlet is used in that country:

Analog vs Digital Telephone Systems CAUTION !

Most computer modems are designed to work only with analog phone systems. Many hotels and businesses use digital phone systems. These digital systems can damage your modem. Before connecting to a new phone system, determine if the system is analog or digital by inquiringat the front desk or by using a "modem saver", a small electronic testing device that can identify digital phone systems.
